Hey, Kevin here 👋🏽 This tool is meant to help you with your carb problem, or at least give you a better understanding of it. Feedback or bug reports are welcome at @osakaclassicgarage.
What does a carburettor actually do?
An engine burns a mixture of air and fuel. The carburettor is the component that mixes the two – purely mechanically, using nothing but airflow, floats and tiny holes (jets). The Prelude has two of them side by side. The control unit (ECU) helps out with small electric valves.
Below you can operate the carb yourself: ignition ON, give it gas, engine cold or warm – and see what happens inside.
= ideal mixture (“λ = 1”). More fuel means rich, less means lean.

Seven stations from the tank to the cylinder
You’ll also find the numbers on the system map. “Show on the map” zooms straight there.
The mixture ratio decides everything
Bucking, flat spot when accelerating, popping back through the intake, engine runs hot, stalls at idle.
Smooth idle, clean throttle response, O2 sensor swings between 0.4 and 0.6 V.
Black smoke, fuel smell, sooty plugs, high consumption, afterfire, catalytic converter runs hot.
The technical terms, explained simply
How the fuel system works together
The whole system in one picture: from the tank at the rear to the engine. Pick a situation above (e.g. “Cranking cold”) and you’ll see what happens. Every part can be tapped.
Adjustment Assistant
Follows the shop manual order: basic prerequisites and fuel supply first, then synchronization, idle and mixture. Enter your readings, the tool compares them with the spec and tells you what to do next. Your entries are saved in this browser.
Cleared.
Troubleshooting by Symptom
The manual’s five symptom tables (PGM-CARB 11-14/15, carburettor 11-46/47, fuel supply 11-81, air intake 11-88, emission control 11-93) combined, plus a diagnosis for fuel at the charcoal canister. Within each table, check in the order ① → ② → ③.
Read the Blink Code
Ignition ON, fold down the carpet inspection flap in the passenger footwell and watch the LED on top of the control unit. Multiple faults are blinked one after another. Count the blinks along or pick the code directly.
Blinks counted
Control Unit Pinout A & B
Connectors drawn as in the manual (terminal side view, 11-9 / 11-11). Measurements at ECU test harness A 07HAZ-PJ7000A or B 07HAZ-PJ7010A. Ground for voltage measurements is almost always B8, or A16 (sensors).
Component Index
Every part of the fuel and carburettor system with function, spec, test procedure, typical faults, wiring and shop manual page. Dashed source chips mark general carburettor knowledge that isn’t directly in the manual.
Calculators & Curves
Enter a reading and see the spec range instantly. Curves are read off the shop manual charts, so they are approximate values.
Fast idle vs. wax temperature
Band from chart 11-75. Engine warm, thermowax valve cooled with cold water.
Evaluate propane enrichment
Engine speed before propane (step 7) and maximum speed with propane (step 9), 11-64.
Convert fuel pressure
Check TW / TA thermistor
Resistance at the disconnected 2P sensor. Curve 11-34 / 11-38, read on a log scale.
MAP sensor voltage
Output WHT to GRN (test lead 07GMJ-ML80100), or A6 to A16. Curve 11-26.
Check choke clearance
Clearance between choke valve and carburettor body, 11-69. Use a drill bit shank or gauge.
Specs, Torque Values, Special Tools
All figures from the Chapter 11 at hand (Fuel and Emissions, Carbureted Engine), with page references.
Source: Honda Prelude shop manual, Chapter 11 “Fuel and Emissions (Carbureted Engine)”, pages 11-1 to 11-122 (US version, 49 States / California): fuel supply, carburettor, PGM-CARB, air intake and emission control including the evaporative emission system.
EU vehicles: European BA4 carburettor models may differ in emission and control parts (O2 sensor, catalytic converter, EGR, individual solenoid valves). Before working on your own car, compare the fitted parts with the map.
Working on the fuel system: no smoking, no open flames, drain fuel into an approved container. Use the propane method only with a propane enrichment kit, outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
